Tell your artist before the trial, not on the morning
The most important thing you can do if you have sensitive skin is communicate this to your artist before the trial appointment. Not in a quick message on the wedding morning, and not just verbally when you arrive, in writing, in advance, with as much specific detail as you can provide.
Information that helps an artist prepare:
- Specific ingredients you react to such as fragrance, alcohol, parabens, certain preservatives, lanolin, latex, or specific pigments.
- Products or brands you know cause problems so your artist can avoid them entirely, rather than discovering a reaction at the trial.
- Skin conditions you have including rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, perioral dermatitis, contact dermatitis, or seborrheic dermatitis.
- Medications that affect your skin, as retinoids thin the skin barrier, certain antibiotics increase photosensitivity, and some medications cause flushing or affect oiliness.
- How your skin typically reacts including redness, hives, swelling, breakouts, irritation, or burning, and how quickly and how severely reactions tend to appear.
What the trial is for (sensitive skin edition)
The bridal trial is essential for anyone, but for sensitive skin it's non-negotiable. It's not just about finding the right look, it's about testing every product that will be on your face for 10+ hours on your wedding day, with enough lead time to identify and resolve any issues.
Book the trial at least 6–8 weeks before the wedding. If you react to something at the trial, you have time to identify the cause, substitute the product, and test the replacement at a second appointment. If you trial two weeks before the wedding and react, the options are much more limited.
Products that tend to work better for sensitive skin
- Fragrance-free formulas are important because fragrance is one of the most common triggers for skin reactions, and fragrance-free products across all categories reduce this risk significantly.
- Mineral-based or clean formulations such as mineral foundations with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are generally well-tolerated by reactive skin and have the added benefit of some inherent SPF, though for photography reasons the SPF in the base needs careful management.
- Hypoallergenic and dermatologically tested products are not a guarantee but are a useful filter for product selection.
- Gentle eye products matter because the eye area is particularly prone to sensitivity, and waterproof formulas use solvents that some skin types react to, making fragrance-free, ophthalmologically tested options safer.
- Primers that suit your specific skin type are essential, as silicone-heavy primers can cause congestion for some skin types while water-based options are better tolerated by sensitive or reactive skin.
What to avoid in the weeks before your wedding
- New active skincare such as retinoids, acids, and vitamin C can trigger sensitivity and thin the skin barrier, so avoid introducing anything new in the 4–6 weeks before the wedding.
- Facials or skin treatments with significant downtime such as chemical peels, dermaplaning, and microneedling disrupt the skin barrier and should not happen close to the wedding date.
- Waxing or threading the face within 48 hours can leave the skin sensitised, so do them at least 3–4 days before the wedding.
- Testing new products for the first time the week of the wedding is a risk you should avoid, because if you haven't used a product before, that is not the time to introduce it.
Patch testing (applying a product to a small area of skin to check for reaction) can identify clear allergens but doesn't predict every possible reaction. Some reactions are cumulative, they happen when multiple products interact, or when products are worn for many hours. This is why the trial, with the full set of products applied in the full sequence, is more informative than individual patch tests.
After the trial, wait and watch. Some reactions don't appear immediately, they develop over the following hours or the next day. If you notice redness, swelling, itching, or breakouts in the 48 hours after the trial, message your artist immediately with specific notes on what and where. The sooner they know, the more options you have to resolve it before the wedding.
The £49 studio trial is the place to work through this properly. Share your sensitivities before you arrive, and we'll have the right products ready, tested, adjusted, and confirmed for your skin before the wedding morning.
